PARENT & EDUCATOR CHECKLIST
Direct answer
A smart toy is not low-risk just because it is made for children
Before buying, identify whether the toy records audio or images, connects to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, requires an account, sends data to a cloud service, contains advertising or purchases, and still works when the app or service is unavailable.
Ten questions to answer before purchase
- Does it contain a microphone, camera, location feature, or open chat?
- Which features work completely offline?
- Is a parent account required, and what age information is requested?
- Where are voice, image, and account data processed or stored?
- Can recordings and the account be deleted?
- Does the app use advertising, analytics, or third-party trackers?
- Are purchases or subscriptions required after setup?
- Can strangers contact the child or share content?
- How long will the app, server, and security updates be supported?
- What useful functions remain if the company stops operating the service?
Risk by connectivity
| Design | Typical capability | Main check |
|---|---|---|
| No radio / offline | Preset sounds, touch, movement | Physical safety, battery, cleaning, volume |
| Bluetooth companion app | Control, content updates, simple coding | Permissions, app maintenance, device compatibility |
| Wi-Fi and cloud | Voice recognition, generated responses, remote content | Account, retention, deletion, subscription, service continuity |
| Camera or social features | Images, video, sharing, calls | Contacts, moderation, storage, access controls |
Safer default setup
- Create the minimum account information required and use a unique password.
- Deny permissions that are not needed for the chosen activity.
- Use a supervised network and keep firmware and the companion app updated.
- Disable chat, public sharing, purchases, and persistent listening when possible.
- Review stored recordings and deletion controls periodically.
- Remove batteries or electronics before cleaning and follow the actual product instructions.
Evidence limit: A marketplace listing may omit or oversimplify privacy behavior. If the manufacturer does not provide a readable privacy policy, app identity, deletion process, or support commitment, treat that absence as a purchasing risk.
Does a toy need Wi-Fi to be considered smart?
No. Sensors, local voice commands, programmed movement, and Bluetooth control can provide interactive features without a cloud connection.
Is an offline smart toy always safe?
No. Offline toys can still present battery, charging, small-part, volume, cleaning, mechanical, and material risks.
What if the listing does not name the app?
Treat app support as unverified. Do not assume compatibility, privacy controls, or long-term availability from screenshots alone.
